Version 2026-10 · Draft for review by US, EU and Swiss counsel before launch
Biometric data policy
Avatique ID compares a live selfie with the photo on your ID to confirm you are a real, adult person and the person on the document. This page says exactly what we collect, why, and when we destroy it.
1. What we collect
- A photo of your identity document, three to five selfie frames taken while you follow on-screen head movements, and what we read from the document: name, date of birth, expiry date, document number, issuing country.
- From the document photo and the selfie we compute face templates: lists of numbers describing a face's geometry. Face templates are biometric identifiers. Photographs themselves are not used to identify anyone beyond this check.
2. Why
- To confirm that the person verifying is live (not a photo, screen or mask), matches their document, and is 18 or older.
- For creators and people depicted in likeness models: to keep proof that everyone appearing in content is a verified adult, as US record-keeping law and card-network rules require, and to stop a person whose account was closed from opening another one.
- We never sell, lease, trade or otherwise profit from biometric data, never use it for advertising, and never use it to train models.
3. Consent
- We ask for your written consent (a checkbox you tick before any photo is taken) and record when you gave it. Without it, no check starts.
- You can withdraw consent at any time by writing to [email protected]. Your face templates are then deleted within 30 days; creators then need another way to verify before they can publish.
4. How long we keep it
- Fans' age checks: every image and face template is deleted as soon as the check is decided. We keep only the date you passed.
- Failed or abandoned checks: images, templates and what was read are deleted after 30 days.
- Creators and depicted people: the document image and one selfie are kept for 7 years as our record that the person is an adult. The other selfie frames are deleted after 30 days.
- Face templates of verified people: destroyed 3 years after the check at the latest, or earlier when you delete your account or withdraw consent. If we close an account for breaking our rules, its template is kept until that 3-year limit so the same person can't return under another name.
- Deletion is automatic: a scheduled job destroys data on its date, and we keep a log that it happened.
5. How we protect it
- Every image is encrypted with its own key before it is stored, in storage kept separate from everything else. Face templates and what was read from documents are encrypted in our database.
- Checks run on our own servers. The service that measures faces keeps nothing: images go in, measurements come out.
- Only our trained verification staff can see images, only for checks waiting for a decision. Every view is logged with the reviewer's name and time, and each image shown carries their name.
- We will disclose biometric data only with your consent, to complete a check you asked for, or when the law or a valid court order requires it.
6. Questions
- Write to [email protected]. You can ask what we hold about you, ask us to delete it, or complain to your data protection authority.
